COVID-19 reminders: Five Important Practices We Should Keep From COVID-19

In 2020 our lives changed in significant ways. Some of these changes affected our interactions with each other, as well as how we do business.

The coronavirus helped us to pay closer attention to how we interact with each other, and we implemented new practices to minimise transmission.

Many of us practiced washing our hands regularly, physical distancing, sanitising and wearing masks.

Although there has been some improvement in managing the spread of the virus, it will remain with us for a while.  As such, we have a few helpful reminders of COVID-19-related practices that we should keep.

Sanitise

Even before COVID-19, many of us were aware of the many spaces that germs thrive. Washing our hands and sanitising while out in public are healthy habits that we should keep. Germ related illnesses like Hepatitis A, Gastrointestinal illnesses (food poisoning, acute diarrhoea, etc.) and the cold and flu are still prevalent. Remember, it is easy to encounter germs from handling money, surfaces and even through physical contact with others.

Keep practicing physical distancing

Social distancing or physical distancing has been a challenge for us because we are social beings. However, one of the lessons from social distancing is understanding better how to give others personal space while out in public. We’ve all experienced someone coughing or sneezing near us, and sometimes, the person may not cover their nose or mouth. The cold and flu are caused by virus germs, so a little distance is still good!

Key Questions About Socialising During Covid-19 Pandemic

Wear a face mask

The face mask may offer some benefits in helping to prevent the spread of the disease when “donning and doffing” the mask is done correctly.  This is the process of putting on and removing the mask properly to prevent contamination.

The surgical masks and the N95 masks are most effective. Homemade masks may offer some protection but must be worn properly. They must be removed, washed, disinfected and ironed after each use.

Be mindful of how you socialise

By now, many of us know someone who has either caught the virus or has it. While vaccination efforts continue, we still need to limit the number of people that we gather with. Remember, some people are asymptomatic and can still spread it. Even if you have been vaccinated, it is wise to still perform good hand and respiratory hygiene, physical distancing, and limiting contact to the members of one’s own household.

In some cases, even in this group, self-isolation is necessary if/when someone becomes ill with the virus.  Monitor your children to ensure that they are not in contact with other persons including other children.

Practice Mindfulness

We experienced unique challenges that made some of us feel isolated and overwhelmed. Some parents had to work from home, while their children attended virtual classes blurring the lines between work and home, and school and home. Anxiety and other stress-related illnesses have become common, so practicing mindfulness is one way to relax. It is still important to also be mindful of how others may be feeling since each person’s situation is unique.

We know that it is easy to return to old habits, but keeping these practices in mind could help us to improve our personal lives and enjoy interacting with each other in healthier ways.
