The coronavirus (COVID-19) has assumed prominence in all of our minds.  Our focus on the virus is understandable as it has affected all facets of our lives and our daily activities.

Understandably, this virus has captured our attention. However, there are other illnesses.  And, many people with health complaints that typically need regular medical care.

Unfortunately, with the current restrictions, people who are attended to at the hospital’s Out-Patients’ Clinic (OPC) are unable to continue with their regular scheduled visits.

Yello wants to help.  We sought out Dr Kendra Blanchard, Orthopaedic Registrar at the General Hospital.

Dr Blanchard has provided helpful tips for OPC patients who are currently affected by the change in appointments.

Here are eight useful tips for patients of the Out-Patients’ Clinic (OPC):

1.

People with chronic medical illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease or hypertension must ensure that they have an adequate supply (at least one month) of their maintenance medications.

2.

Patients who were placed on special diets must continue to adhere to these dietary recommendations.

3.

Should any of these patients experience flu-like symptoms, they should stay at home and call the ministry of health hotlines 458-4787 (45VIRUS) and 538-4787 (53VIRUS).

4.

Postoperative patients with wounds should continue accessing dressing at their district medical station as indicated upon their discharge.  The healthcare practitioner will contact the attending surgeon and team if there are any concerns.

5.

Postoperative Orthopaedic patients with casts are advised to continue with the date of appointment given upon their discharge.

6.

In the case of an emergency, contact the Accident and Emergency Department.  Services continue to be available 24/7.

7.

Stay abreast of the updates from the Ministry of Health.  OPC patients will be contacted when the resumption of the regular schedule occurs.

8.

Patients are encouraged to continue to observe the guidelines outlined by the Ministry of Health.

We urge you to stay informed and to practice good personal hygiene as well as caution.  And it’s best to stay indoors unless it’s necessary to venture out.

Remember protecting yourself is protecting your neighbour. Do wear your mask, and adhere to the social distancing guidelines.

Stay safe.
