Did you know that bottlenose dolphins sleep with only one-half of their brain at a time? They do so to stay alert for any predators, such as sharks, that might be around.

Did you know that bottlenose dolphins have whisker hairs on their rostrum when they are born? These stay for about three days and then fall out.

Did you know the coastal bottlenose dolphin and the offshore bottlenose dolphin differ in where they inhabit? The Offshores are pelagic species that like to swim in deep oceans, more than 100 m deep, and swim long distances. On the other hand, Coastal bottlenose dolphins like shallow waters up to 7 m deep and generally stay within a 3 km2 range.

Did you know that dolphins cannot smell? Instead, they evolved a completely different sense called Echolocation. It works as a natural sonar enabling dolphins to ‘see’ long distances underwater without using their eyes. Bats also have developed this sense.

Did you know that there are 36 different dolphins worldwide, and bottlenose dolphins are just one of them? Killer whales are also officially categorised as dolphins.
