This International Day of Listening 2019 – Lend an Ear or Share!
by Lou-Ann Jordan Sep 16, 2019
“Being heard is so close to being loved that for the average person, they are almost indistinguishable,” – David Augsburger.
On 19 September, International Day of Listening, Grenadians have the opportunity to engage in a meaningful endeavour as a small group of community partners are collaborating to offer free listening in the community.
Passionate about raising awareness for compassionate listening, and its importance in building community and supporting emotional wellness, the group will host a series of events.
The activities are for people who need to be listened to and for those desiring to give someone else a chance to be heard.
Here are some of the activities the public can look forward to:
A Day of Compassionate Listening
Activity: Volunteers, identifiable by a handheld sign, will be posted at different locations throughout St. George’s.
How to participate?
Be on the lookout for volunteers with signs in and around St. George’s. Simply approach them and share your story.
Building Healthier Relationships
Activity: An afternoon for couples (romantic/platonic/ familial) to share perspectives and practise compassionate listening.
How to participate?
Grab your spouse, partner or friend and make your way to Lance aux Epines Cottages. The event will be held on 21 September from 2pm to 5pm. Admittance costs $150EC per couple and includes dinner. Tickets should be purchased in advance.
Free Listening
Activity: Listening benches will be installed in various communities. Volunteers will sit on the benches at specific times, offering an empathetic ear.
How to participate?
If you’d like to take part, look out for the beautifully decorated benches in your community and take a seat. Someone will be there to listen—compassionately.
Best-selling author and coach, Cheryl Richardson once stated: “People start to heal the moment they feel heard.” This September, take the opportunity not only to be heard but more importantly to be healed.
