The Caribbean islands are known for their beauty, warmth, and serenity. The region has always been a ‘must-visit’ destination for travellers fleeing cold weather or looking for respite. However, in addition to its aesthetic appeal and overall charm, its carnivals are another reason many flock to the islands.

Carnival is one of the Caribbean’s biggest attractions. Thousands descend on the island of choice yearly to ‘jump up’ with locals and other visitors. Some even engage in island-hopping, traversing several islands to participate in the merriment. Typically, it all kicks off early in the year, with celebrations of islands like Trinidad and Tobago, Carriacou, Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao coinciding with the pre-Lenten season. Others are scattered over the remaining months, all the way to December (Montserrat and St. Kitts and Nevis both have a carnival at the end of the year).

Moreover, to add to the excitement, a few countries comprising more than one island have additional festivals. For example, Tobago, Trinidad’s twin island, has its very own carnival. Similarly, Kayak Mas, which continues to rise in popularity, is celebrated on Carriacou, one of the islands comprising Grenada’s tri-island state. Beginning in late July and ending in August, Nevis’ Culturama is basically another carnival festival.
