Superheroes are awesome!

Whether it’s the x-ray vision, the ability to move at the speed of lightning, or the power to smash things with enormous green hands, superhuman powers are amazing.

And, the film industry continues to amaze us with the plethora of super-humans they proffer—heroes whom we can admire, for their varied abilities.

But, as children our dad really was our superheroes—for some he still is.  As young children, we saw our fathers as embodying, and even exceeding, the greatest powers of superheroes.  Marvel’s characters wouldn’t stand a chance coming against him.

Well, let’s continue to make him feel like a superhero.  And, with Father’s Day fast approaching we’re presented with the perfect opportunity.

No more absentminded well wishes, last-minute sprints to the store, or calls at 11:59.   It’s your dad, your superhero.  This year give him a father’s day he’ll never forget.  How?  Start planning early.

By planning early this year, you can get your dad something he actually likes.  We’ll get you started.  Here are some tips on how to blow your dad’s mind this Father’s Day.

Discover What He Actually Likes

Does your dad like receiving gifts?  Maybe he’d prefer for you to help him out in the yard.  Before you buy the cologne, we suggest you do a google search for Gary Chapman. Why?  It’s simple; the American author has been revolutionising relationships with his book and online services, The 5 Love Languages®.

According to Chapman, people connect with others in five different ways: quality time, acts of service, words of affirmation, receiving gifts, and physical affection.  Being able to identify how our loved ones feel cared for, he believes, will help relationships.

So either get the book or check online and have dad do the test.  Then use it as a guide in your Father’s Day planning.  It may surprise you to learn that an hour watching a cricket match with dad makes him feel more loved than buying him a shave set.

Say: “I’ve Got You, Dad” with Action

Do you have chores you loathe to do? Ask your dad, and he’ll probably list a few.  No, really do ask him.  Nothing will say: “I’ve got you, Dad” like rolling up your sleeves and jumping in to tackle those irksome tasks for him.

To make it even more special, spend some time with him taking note of his ‘to-do’ list.  You can surprise him by moving through the items on the list over a few weeks.  Another option is to select the task you’ve noticed he’s been delaying.  If you’re capable, you can do it yourself, or hire a professional.

Whichever you decide the idea is to show your dad, he can rely on you—you’ve got his back.

Host A Boisterous Game Night

This is for the sports aficionado father.  If your dad is a sports lover, then it’s likely that based on his sport of choice he has a match he considers an ‘all-time favourite.’ A game he never tires of watching or rehashing.

Now this will involve some research.  Scour the internet for a video recording of the game.  Depending on how long ago it was, you may have some difficulty.  Don’t be discouraged, if you’re unable to find the one in question, you can locate another old match with his team besting their opponents.

Then plan a game night with the main event being a viewing of the match-up you’ve unearthed.  In addition to treating the big guy to a trip down memory lane, you’ll be creating a new memory with him—and having a blast while doing it.

And a word of caution, this activity may result in some boisterousness.

Plan a Lazy Sunday Road Trip

This is a simple but meaningful activity.  Life gets busy, and as it does, it’s easy for us to neglect to spend quality time with our loved ones.

A Sunday afternoon road trip takes you away from your daily routine and gives you a chance to unwind and catch up with your dad.

The great thing about the trip is you can plan with an activity in mind.  A picnic, hike or a bout of fishing, any of these activities can be incorporated into the trip.

Whatever you choose to do, a road trip is a great way to bond with your favourite superhero.

Opt for Best Seats in the House

Here’s another idea for those fathers that are sports fanatics.  This means he and his friends are prone to analysing the minute details of their favourite games.

While you may not be able to access a ticket to the next premier league match, are there local games that will provide as much excitement?  Then why not purchase the ‘best seats in the house’ tickets for the next local match-up?  Put the guy in the middle of the action, where he can really experience it all.

And, if feasible, you can include a ticket for his best pal too. The two are more than likely to make it an entertaining afternoon.  The best part is you’ll get to see a whole new side of him.
