Massage therapy is pretty much synonymous with the word, relaxation.  Images of lying face down on a bed, while oily hands work the ‘kinks’ out of one’s back, neck and shoulders flood the mind.  Massage therapy is a well-known form of holistic care and is named among the ranks of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM).

Non-invasive, this form of therapy is performed with practitioners using their hands, fingers and at times forearms and elbows to rub, press and otherwise manipulate soft tissue.  The manipulation of the soft tissue, which includes muscles, tendons and ligaments, is done with the aim of enhancing one’s health and well-being.

Although the popularity of massage therapists lies in the fact that their service is engaged for relaxation purposes they may also be visited for rehabilitative massages.  Commonly known as a deep tissue massage, this form of clinical treatment usually follows a visit to the osteopath or chiropractor.

Overall, massage therapists endeavour to create a calm soothing environment for their clients. Generally, they work at spas, clinics, hotels, fitness centres or physician offices.

Here are a few reasons to visit a massage therapist and enjoy either a relaxation or rehabilitative massage are:

  • Stress relief
  • Pain Relief
  • Relaxation
  • Circulation improvement
  • Sports injury rehabilitation
  • Anxiety and depression
  • General wellness promotion

Internationally as well as locally massage therapy has become a much sought after practice in the pursuit of optimal health.  And, certainly the options are not limited.
