The 3rd International Day of Yoga takes place on Wednesday 21st June 2017 and aims to unite the international community of yoga lovers and promote yoga for peace and harmony. Yoga is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice originated in India, but today, is practiced by millions of people around the world. The word ‘yoga’ derives from Sanskrit and means to join or unite, symbolizing the union of body and consciousness.

Recognising not only its universal appeal, but its mental, physical and spiritual benefits to those who practice it, the United Nations proclaimed 21st June as the International Day of Yoga.

The day aims to raise awareness of the many benefits of practicing yoga.

This year’s theme, organised by the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations, is ‘Yoga for Health.’ The theme highlights the fact that yoga can contribute to holistic ways of achieving equilibrium between the mind and body. The organisers believe that this approach to health and wellbeing can make a direct and useful contribution to humankind’s quest to achieve sustainable development towards lifestyles in harmony with nature.
