It’s February, and Guyana has come alive as our annual Mashramani celebrations on 23 February are well underway. There are several contributors to the anticipation that can be felt throughout Guyana. For one, the local radio stations, which have been blasting the latest soca and calypso on the nation’s airwaves. The various competitions—soca, calypso, dancehall monarchs, road march, and costume bands—are another.

Undoubtedly, our soca artists, calypsonians and costume bands experience their own excitement as they begin to prepare. Activities such as the People’s Choice contest keep everyone plugged in, as all are invited to vote for their favourite song of the season. Also, we cannot fail to mention the outlying fetes. It all adds to the thrill!

Each year, ‘Mash’ grows with larger numbers of regional and international visitors participating. However, Mashramani 2024 promises to be bigger and better than ever, mainly because the goal is to ensure all of Guyana can join the festivities. The attempt to garner more local participation mirrors the festival’s theme, “Celebrating Our People and Our Prosperity”, and will see associated events extending to other regions. Therefore, an increase in local participation in the costume and float parade and other official events is anticipated.

With the festival running until the first week of March, there are lots of activities occurring. Here’s a look at the schedule of events for Mashramani 2024.
