Sonia Noel is a Guyanese fashion icon, and the creator the fashion label Mariska’s Designs. The design label is named for her oldest daughter Mariska. Sonia Noel’s designs are inspired Guyana’s natural beauty, filled vibrant colours and warm tones. As the CEO of Guyana Fashion Week, Sonia Noel has championed the development of Guyanese creative industry and nurtured young designers.  In 2012, she launched the Sonia Noel Foundation for the Creative Arts (SNFCA). The Foundation encourages emerging Caribbean talent in the creative arts. Today, Sonia Noel shares her style inspirations and beauty favourites.

Where is your favourite place to shop for clothes in Guyana?

My favorite place to shop for clothing in Guyana is Sonia Noel Designs. I am fortunate to make my own clothing.

Do you have a favourite local designer, if yes, who and why?

We have so many super talented local designers it is hard to select a favourite, however, Nelsion Nurse and Andy Cummings are two young designers who are super talented.

What are your classic ‘must have’ items of clothing in your closet?

I am always drawn to versatile pieces that are easy to travel with because I am always travelling.

Is there a particular style of jewellery that you prefer?

I use to wear a lot of precious stones but now my preference is costume jewelry and I enjoy more the earth tones ones.

What is your favourite perfume?

My favourite is definitely Thierry Mugler’s Angel perfume.

Do you prefer wearing flats or heels?

I love heels because it adds elegance and sophistication to certain outfits.  Flats do come in handy though, especially, when you are required to do lots of walking.

How would describe your everyday work attire?

My everyday work attire varies. It ranges from a sun dress to a classic cut power pants suit. It really depends on if I have meetings.

How would you describe your evening out attire?

It depends on the functions. I like to make a statement so it will range from dressy casual to a show stopper.

Where do you get your hair styled?

Corin Gibson has been my hair stylist for the last two decades. My very long braid is my signature look. From a mile away people recognise Sonia Noel because of my braids.

What style tips did your mother pass onto you?

My mom was a seamstress and so she always dressed me up as a young girl. She always encouraged me to be classy.
