For those of us who are sighted, it is imperative that we do all we can to protect our eyes. Be warned, the following every day habits can damage your eyes.

Not wearing sunglasses

The sun’s harsh UV rays don’t only damage your skin; they can also lead to eye damage. You protect your skin from the sun, and you should always protect your eyes. Your eyes can become permanently damaged by long-term exposure to UV radiation.  UV radiation can age eyes prematurely, contribute to the development of cataracts, macular degeneration, and even cancer. When picking out sunglasses, look for ones that offer UVA/UVB protection.

Staring at screens all day

Have you ever heard of Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS)? This is a condition that affects those who spend two or more continuous hours a day on the computer. CVS encompasses a range of eye strain and pain. Long hours in front of a screen can lead to eyestrain, fatigue, dry eyes, difficulty focusing, and blurred vision.

Using old makeup

How long have you had that mascara? Old eye makeup and dirty makeup brushes are minefields of bacteria that have accumulated over time. Bacteria from makeup and brushes can cause a host of problems including pinkeye or conjunctivitis. Mascara is most often associated with eye infections; be sure to replace your mascara every four to six months.

Sleeping in contact lenses

You may have neglected to take out your contacts before bed and regretted it the next morning when you woke up with dry, red eyes. Sleeping in your contacts can cause more damage than you think. While wearing contacts, it’s more difficult for the corneas (the thin, transparent membrane that covers the front of the eye) to get nutrients, oxygen and lubrication. This can cause an infection of the cornea that can cause loss of vision.

Smoking

Smoking is a big no-no when it comes to keeping your body happy and healthy. Many people don’t realise that smoking can also affect their eyesight. Cigarette smoking has been linked to eye diseases including cataracts, macular degeneration, and uveitis.

Rubbing your eyes

We all know that we should keep our hands away from our eyes, but sometimes it’s tempting to give them a rub. Try to resist. Rubbing your eyes can transit bacteria and viruses into your eyes leading to infection. It can also increase the likelihood of inducing astigmatism or changes to the cornea.
