Many of us see it, some of us struggle with it, and for those of us who do, we would gladly trade if for a less visible body issue.  Hyperhidrosis is an embarrassing, debilitating problem that can cause its sufferers to spend thousands of dollars in an effort to eradicate.  In this issue of body issues, Yello tackles sweaty armpits—what it is, the causes, and treatment.

What is it?

We’re not talking about a slight dampness under the arms.  Hyperhidrosis is a problem experienced by a greater number of people, both men and women.  It occurs as a result of overactive sweat glands producing more sweat than is required for temperature control.  While these glands may cause overheating in the feet, head, hands, and groin, the armpits are the most common.

What causes it?

There are two classifications of hyperhidrosis primary and secondary.  Primary hyperhidrosis is excessive sweating that centralised in one area, such as in the underarm. It is not a result of a medical issue, but instead, it is inherited. Secondary hyperhidrosis differs in that it isn’t centralised but perspiration occurs throughout the body.  It occurs in adulthood and results from alcohol abuse, obesity, or food supplements.

How to stop it?

Excessive sweating in the armpits can be embarrassing.  No one likes to see the dark pools forming on their shirts.  Here are a few remedies to deal with your sweaty pits, even if it’s a clinical problem:

Antiperspirants

An antiperspirant is the most cost-effective way of dealing with excessive sweaty armpits.  However, something to note is that the terms antiperspirants and deodorant while often used interchangeable are not the same.  Deodorants do not contain anti-sweat ingredients.  But they are effective in fighting the smell associated with underarm sweating. When selecting an antiperspirant do make sure it is clearly stated on the product.

Botox Injections

Botox™ is a drug that has grown in its popularity in recent years.  It is commonly used as a treatment against wrinkles and fine lines.  However, internationally it is also used to combat excessive sweating.  These injections curb excessive sweating as by blocking the secretion of the chemical that triggers the sweat glands.

Laser Treatment

Similar to the Botox™ treatment, laser is an expensive option for dealing with hyperhidrosis.  Laser treatment is used to target and destroy the sweat glands eliminating the problem.

Our list of treatments is by no means exhaustive.  However, while debating the best course of long-term action, antiperspirants may offer fast and cheap relief.  To grab a pack of antiperspirants, see our listing under pharmacies for the ones closest to you.
