How to make the most of Carnival in Jamaica

Budget for the events: Carnival season has various events where you can enjoy live performances, meet new people, and have a good time. Each band has different packages, allowing you to get season passes or tickets to specific events if you plan on attending some events only. Although some tickets allow full access, you should budget for refreshments, transportation, and miscellaneous expenses.

Organise your crew: Going to fetes, parties, J’Ouvert, and Mas is much more exciting when you do it with people you know, trust, and enjoy partying with. So, talk to your friends early about the band you wish to join, decide on the events you plan to attend, and organise so you can have a memorable experience together.

Join a band: Jamaica has four carnival bands – Bacchanal Jamaica, Ocho Rios Carnival, Xaymaca International and Xodus Carnival. Each band has signature events, exclusives, stunning costumes, and other features for an exciting carnival experience. If you plan on wearing a costume and participating in the road parade (Mas), you must join a band.

Buy your tickets early: Each band organises exclusive events, including season passes and specific event tickets. Early bird tickets are also available, giving a slightly discounted cost for some events. You can visit various bands’ websites and social media channels to get event updates, ticket prices, and other crucial information like costume collection.

Dress for the events: Most carnival events involve standing up or dancing for hours. So, remember to dress comfortably and according to the theme for each event. Snug sneakers, sandals, a rag (for waving), sunblock and sunglasses (Road Parade), and an old t-shirt and shorts for J’Ouvert should be on your what-to-wear list. Your band will have several options for carnival costumes. Always secure your valuables while out, and drink responsibly.
