Here’s How to Keep Your Skin Healthy and Glowing This Summer
by Carolyn Lee Jun 16, 2025

During the summer, most people spend time outdoors doing fun activities. However, harmful UV rays, high humidity, and over-exposure to heat can damage the skin or lead to skin issues if not handled properly. We have a few reminders for keeping your skin healthy, protected, and radiant during these hot and humid months.
Before we begin
Prolonged sun exposure can worsen skin problems, such as eczema, rosacea, acne, and psoriasis. If you have pre-existing skin conditions, always consult a dermatologist for guidance on what works best for your skin.
Summer skin care tips
Hydrate
Hydration is essential for overall health and maintaining healthy skin. When dehydrated, skin can appear dull and dry, and you may notice fine lines or wrinkles. Drinking water can remove toxins, keep skin plump, and prevent dryness. You can also use moisturisers with hyaluronic acid, which hydrate the skin, and sunscreen to protect against harmful UVA and UVB rays.
Use sun protection
Sunscreen can penetrate the skin, creating an invisible shield. Wearing it is crucial for protecting the skin against harmful ultraviolet rays, which can cause skin cancer and premature ageing. Ensure you use sunscreen before going outdoors (15 or 30 minutes). You should reapply it after swimming and after wearing it for two hours.
Exfoliate and moisturise
Exfoliating the skin removes dead skin cells, prevents congestion, and improves hydration. Do it in the morning before applying toner, moisturiser, and sunscreen. Always use a moisturiser, then shield freshly exfoliated skin with an SPF to lock in moisture. A lightweight moisturiser might be better during the summer, but ask your dermatologist for suggestions.
Wear sun-protection clothing
Clothing protects against the sun, with darker or brighter colours absorbing UV rays better than lighter shades. Materials like denim, canvas, synthetics, and wool provide better protection than thin fabrics. On hot days, wear loose-fitting garments that cover most of the body. Look for clothing with Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) labels that offer additional sun-shielding properties.
Repair damaged skin
If you forget to apply sunscreen or wear protective clothing, try to repair damaged skin. Take a cool shower to soothe the skin and remove sunscreen and sweat residue. Apply a hydrating lotion or moisturiser to replenish lost moisture. Pay attention to sunburns, but do not pick at peeling skin. Aloe vera can help soothe sunburn. If you experience pain, an over-the-counter pain reliever might help.
Final thoughts
Be mindful when you go outdoors – avoid peak hours when the sun is high in the sky. You can also wear broad-brimmed hats and caps that cover the scalp, face, and neck.
