Jamaica 59: Come Mek We Celebrate Online!

“Emancipendence” festivities to mark Jamaica’s 59th year of independence will happen virtually this year.

Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport Olivia Grange encourages this move to keep Jamaicans safe while celebrating.

This is reflected in this year’s theme, “Jamaica 59: Come Mek We Celebrate Online!”

According to the Gleaner, celebrations are expected to last approximately ten days and end with a made-for-television event dubbed, A Jamaica Independence Story, which will air on Independence Day (6 August).

Some of the celebratory activities include the Fine Arts finals and Festival Queen finals. The governor general will also host an evening of fine entertainment.

Jamaicans at home and abroad are encouraged to decorate their homes, buildings, storefronts, and yards with the Jamaican colours and join the virtual events that will be simulcast online and on television.

Prime Minister, Most Hon. Andrew Holness recently announced an update in curfew hours, which saw the hours returning to 8pm-5am on weekdays. On Sundays, Emancipation Day and Independence Day, the curfew begins at 3pm and end at 5am.

Over the years, many Jamaicans have trekked to the north coast for beach days, beach parties and river events to celebrate these holidays.

With COVID-19 safety measures and restrictions in place, much partying is not expected. The number of persons allowed at a small event remains at 100 persons or 50 per cent of the venue’s capacity.

While beaches and rivers will be opened, Minister Holness explained that these establishments would have tighter operating hours. They are allowed to open 6am to 2pm on Sundays and public holidays, and from 6am to 4pm, Mondays to Saturdays.

The update in curfew hours and other COVID-19 containment measures results from the recent spike in coronavirus cases on the island.

Despite the pandemic, Emancipation Day and Independence Day are beloved holidays in Jamaica.

We hope that you will put your national colours on and enjoy the virtual celebratory events that will be showcased by the Jamaica Culture and Development Commission (JCDC) and the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport.

Happy Emancipation Day and Independence Day, Jamaica!
