Six Yummy Caribbean Dishes You Can Make at Home This Halloween

If you enjoy Halloween, you’re probably already busy planning what cool costume to wear, picking out scary decorations or stocking up on candy.

With the excitement of planning, choosing a fun outfit and decorating, some of us may forget to eat, especially on time. Giving away and receiving sweet treats is great but suffering from hunger pangs isn’t.

We’ve got a few Caribbean dishes you can make that will leave you with lots of time for Halloween festivities.

Spicy Barbecued Wings

This cool recipe from JCS Kitchen captures the theme of Halloween, and it’s also delicious. Dubbed “JCS Spicy BBQ Black Bat Wings”, the recipe is easy to follow and with a meal preparation time of ten minutes and one hour cook time, you will have ample time to eat, get dressed and put your candy out.

Saltfish Fritters

Most Caribbean families prepare a balanced meal, which is usually enjoyed by mid-afternoon on Sundays. With Halloween being on Sunday this year, we don’t see a huge diversion from this tradition. So, if you plan on making a full meal, these appetising saltfish fritters can serve as a yummy treat if you get hungry later. Grace Foods has a simple recipe you can follow to have a batch of saltfish fitters ready in approximately 35 minutes.

Curried Shrimp

Caribbean people love seafood, and shrimp dishes are quite popular on every island. We also love making shrimp meals with curry. Coconut milk, garlic, onion, thyme, hot peppers and other herbs and spices are often added for a burst of flavour. You can add a side of steamed or raw vegetables, rice, or fried green plantains for a fuller meal. If you’d love to make curried shrimp this Halloween, this African Bites recipe is worth trying. Your meal preparation and cook time should be approximately 30 minutes.

Fried Flying Fish

Fried fish is loved throughout the Caribbean, and in Barbados, fried flying fish is usually eaten with coucou on Fridays or Saturdays. Once you know how to make it, you can pretty much enjoy it whenever you like, and Halloween is no exception. We grabbed this fried flying and coucou recipe from Sandals. However, if you don’t have flying fish, you can use this recipe from Totally Barbados to make fried fish and enjoy it with a side of vegetables, festivals, coucou, or rice and pigeon peas. So, you won’t need to over-indulge on Halloween candy after all!

Spicy Coconut Curry Pumpkin Soup

We know pumpkins are great for carving, but in the Caribbean, we love that our pumpkin is best enjoyed cooked. This Trinidadian spicy coconut curry pumpkin soup recipe from Side Chef can be used as an appetiser to delight taste buds before serving a fuller meal.

To create some of these meals, you may need a few extra ingredients,  so search our Find Yello listings to find a supermarket, wholesale, or grocers near you.

Happy Halloween, and remember to keep safe, everyone!
