Nuh Dutty Up Jamaica has been working to plant the seeds of environmental change in Jamaica since 2015. This public education initiative is aimed at changing attitudes towards waste disposal.

As the global push to go green intensifies, so does the local drive to improve waste management.

Nuh Dutty Up Jamaica is launching its 2019 clean-up network as part of on-going efforts to keep Jamaica clean and encourage all Jamaicans to play their part. The launch will be held on 28 March at Shaw Park Hotel, Ocho Rios, St Ann. There will also be a mini clean-up of the area near the hotel immediately following the launch..

The Nuh Dutty Jamaica clean-up network is a selected group of organisations wishing to stage clean-ups in their communities. Network members  include private companies, service clubs, schools, NGOs, and other community-based groups.

The clean-up network provides a kit which includes reusable water bottles, garbage bags, gloves, instructions, contact information, and a stipend to assist with campaign expenses.

This network was launched in March 2017. That year 14 coordinators were selected to host clean-ups in Jamaican communities. In 2018, 21 coordinators were selected to host clean-ups,and 18 clean-ups have been completed to date.

Jamaica Environment Trust (JET) CEO, Suzanne Stanley shared: “The 2018 clean-up network had limited resources. But we still managed to facilitate clean-ups which attracted 786 volunteers who collected 628 bags of garbage weighing over 8,300 pounds.”

And the initiative continues to attract volunteers as Jamaicans are inspired to take action to clean-up their environment. For 2019, 20 coordinators registered to be a part of the network and the participants will receive their clean-up kits at the launch.

The idea for the clean-up network came about in response to repeated requests to JET/Nuh Dutty Up Jamaica to support clean-ups by local community groups and service clubs.

Although many of the clean-ups typically happen around Labour Day, others are hosted throughout the year and are spread around the island.
