On Mother’s Day, we celebrate the women who’ve helped shape our lives by ensuring that she feels loved and valued. Mother’s Day allows mothers to reflect on their journey with their children and, in some instances, what they learned along the way. Some children use the lessons from their mother to inform how they treat their children when they become adults.

Product manager and entrepreneur (Kasha Macka and Tan Tuddy Production) Tantanecia Burnett talks about parenting practices she took from her mom, Mrs  Margaret Ferryman.

Mother’s Day is almost here. Do you have something special planned for your mom?

Mommy takes joy from simple pleasures and hates when we fuss over her too much. A trip to the country would make her heart smile.

Baby Kai.

You are the proud mom of an adorable son, Malachi “Kai” Bryan. How has your relationship with your mother informed your relationship with him?

I grew up in a single-parent household with a mom who is the definition of grace and kindness. I remember her being firm yet slow to anger. My mom raised my sisters and me according to our personalities instead of society’s dictates. My younger sister was fragile and required more attention and care, so she catered to that. I was mature and industrious, which made her entrust me with privileges and responsibilities that were not customary for other pre-teens.

I’ve applied the same principle to raising my son. Providing an environment that nurtures rather than smothers has unlocked his true potential, encouraging him to be fearless. Kai is assertive, self-confident, and wise beyond his years.

Share a memorable Mother’s Day with your son or mom that still stands out for you.

As luck would have it, my mom was visiting for a few weeks in 2020 when they announced that we had the first case of COVID-19 in Jamaica. She was stuck here since all travel to and from the island was postponed. Oh, what sweet bliss it was to have her for those extended months.

Mommy took over the house entirely, and of course, I let her. It was nice not to worry about the mundane household chores for a change. Kai and I often enjoyed waking up to the smell of fried plantains and ackee and saltfish. Having the house immaculately clean and seeing her smile without imagining it over the phone brought immense pleasure.

Though technically a senior citizen, my mom isn’t your typical grandma. If Kai and my nephew (Sir Logan) were playing football, best believe she was in the middle, assuming the role of the goalkeeper or midfield defender. Whenever there’s a game of dominoes, count her in. Planning a road trip, she’s first to the car!

What I remembered most fondly during that time was how happy and playful we were. The pandemic screamed at us to be fearful, worried, and depressed. Yet, I had my mom and son, and all was right in my world.

Where do you get inspiration during tough times as a mom?

Being a mother isn’t a responsibility I take lightly. A mother is also a child’s first best friend, confidante, head chef, lap to sleep in, shoulder to cry on, cheerleader, chauffeur, etc. Nevertheless, I consider myself blessed to have been chosen by Kai to be his mother to help him along life’s journey. For inspiration, I often turn to my mom, my sister-friends, and other great examples of mothers for guidance. Indeed, it takes a community to raise a child. Importantly, I trust my instincts, having the utmost faith that I already innately have all the necessary tools. My truth is I’m raising a king, and there is no road map for this journey.

What are you looking forward to most this Mother’s Day?

Luckily, my mom will be visiting during Mother’s Day. I’m looking forward to spending time with her, ensuring she knows how much she is appreciated, and showering her with love. I will also be mindful of the blessings of being a mother.

We wish you and your mom a happy Mother’s Day, Tantanecia. We hope you enjoy the time with your mom and son. We also want to extend Mother’s Day greetings to all mothers. May your day be filled with love and good vibes!
