Father's Day Self-Care Tips

Men are often celebrated for their courage, strength and bravery.

For some of us, that rugged strength and outward charm are what assures us that with our men around, we are safe.

It’s Father’s Day and time to put the spotlight on our fathers.

The past few months have been challenging for all of us, and we know it’s been stressful for you.

We may not be able to celebrate you the way we would like this year but know that you still mean the world to us.

Thank you for taking care of us; it is time for you to start taking care of you.

We’ve compiled a few self-care tips that men need to start practicing today.

Why is self-care important?

Stress does not discriminate, and as such, it is important that men begin to pay more attention to the signs and symptoms of stress.

Men and women may display signs and symptoms of stress that can be physical, behavioural or psychological.

However, men are more likely to withdraw when stressed. They may also suffer from major depression because of work-related stress.

By implementing self-care into your daily routine, you can reduce anxiety and other stressors.

Self-care habits to start now

Focus on taking care of your mental health: It may not be popular but a helpful habit to develop is talking to a professional about issues such as depression, rage, and frustrations, and how these things make you feel. Even if you are not dealing with a personal crisis presently, it still helps to talk about how you feel, what you need.

Work on positive relationships: Friends and family are important, especially in times of crisis, and as you grow older. Hang out with family and friends and find things to laugh about. Healthy partnerships and good quality close relationships can result in a happier life.

Adopt healthy behaviours: Switch out unhealthy habits for healthier ones such as an exercise routine for strength and flexibility, healthier food and lifestyle choices, or less toxic conversations and relationships. If your relationships make you constantly feel disappointed, undervalued or unappreciated, change is necessary.

Get adequate sleep and rest: It is good to work hard to accomplish goals and take care of your family. However, sleep and rest are needed for you to function optimally. Sleep has many benefits that can add to overall good health. Sleep can help to reduce stress, high blood pressure, enhance your mood and improve memory.

Focus on looking good: Take care of your hair, skin and nails. Your outward appearance matters to those who love you. Get a facial, manicure and pedicure done. These procedures are very relaxing and help you to feel good and look great. You work hard, so don’t be afraid to pamper yourself.

Spend some time alone: This should not be confused with spending time with friends socially. Spending time alone outdoors, meditating, going on a hike or for a swim, allows for relaxation, and may even provide perspective or new ideas.

Get the necessary check-ups: It is necessary to get health checks done according to your age. There are common health issues that men need to pay attention to early. These include tests for prostate cancer, high cholesterol, diabetes, hypertension and heart disease.

It can be a little challenging to begin new habits. However, self-care is crucial to sustaining good health, and these tips are an excellent way to start.

To our fathers, we appreciate your courage, applaud your strength and celebrate your bravery.

Happy Father’s Day!
