A Sugar Mas 47 Survival Guide
by Yello Nov 19, 2018
On 23 November, another Sugar Mas carnival season officially begins in St. Kitts and Nevis. Sugar Mas 47 promises all the usual celebratory revelry alongside fringe events and a new silent party.
With so much to do over the next two months, it’s best to be prepared so you can make the most of carnival. We’ve got you covered! Here’s a quick survival guide for Sugar Mas 47.
Pace Yourself
During carnival season, it’s always tempting to hit every fete. But remember, Sugar Mas spans two months and burn-out is a possibility. Scan the official event calendar and select a few major events that you know you can’t miss.
Wear One-off Fete Clothing
From jouvert to wet fete, your clothes and shoes can sustain a lot of damage when you’re on your worst behaviour. Never wear your Sunday best to fete, unless you want paint and powder stains as souvenirs for years to come.
Brush Up On Your History
This year, the National Carnival History Museum has its grand opening on 3 December. Brush up on your history as you tour the exhibits and learn more about the reason for the carnival season.
Invest in a Waterproof Pouch
If you intend to take your phone on the road or to a party, a waterproof pouch is essential. Tuck any valuables into it for extra protection from water, alcohol, sweat or paint.
Order Your Costume Early
You don’t want to be deciding which band to jump with at the last minute, or ending up with your last choice of costume. Always order your costume well in advance, leaving room for alterations or unfortunate order issues.
Put Comfort and Safety First
Whether you’re on the road, watching a show, or at a fete, always put comfort first. You’re likely to be on your feet a lot, so wear comfortable shoes! Don’t forget to hydrate if you plan to drink alcohol, and never operate a vehicle whilst inebriated. Designate a sober driver instead, or call a taxi service.
Happy Sugar Mas 47; here’s to a fun and safe carnival season!
