The cost can be a major barrier when it comes to indulging in a passion for travel.  These tips will help you give in to your wanderlust on the cheap.

Travel on a shoulder

When you’re on a tight budget you want to carefully select the time you travel. During peak seasons (summer and over the Christmas holidays) not only are the crowds at their maximum, so are the prices for flights and accommodations. Travelling on a shoulder, generally April and May, and September through October, means you’ll save on airfare and accommodation costs.

Compare

Compare, compare, compare. When looking for flights use multiple airfare comparison sites such as Google Flights, Skyscanner and CheapOair to make sure you get the best price.

Travel midweek

If you can try to book a midweek flight because these are usually cheaper than those on a Friday or a weekend.

Book in advance

Generally, the earlier you book a flight or a place to stay during your trip, the cheaper it will be.

Look for hotel alternatives

To save on accommodation costs, consider staying in a small bed and breakfast, a vacation rental or in a hostel, rather than a hotel. Hostel prices are usually quite cheap, but you will be sacrificing privacy by staying in a dorm. With vacation rentals (such as those on Airbnb) you can rent a whole house or apartment or even just a room.

Watch where you eat

If you’re eating out try and avoid stopping at places near to major tourist attractions. Prices are likely to be high and the quality low. You can often find cheap lunches in a supermarket or a fresh food market. Do your research ahead of time into budget dining and aim as much as possible to eat where the locals are. If you’re staying in an Airbnb home, you can save money by cooking your own meals instead of eating out.

Do free things

Explore activities and place that are free in your destination city. Visit the parks, free galleries, take a free walking tour. You’ll be surprised at how much you can find to do that won’t cost you anything.  Research these free activities ahead of time.
