Several Caribbean countries have been added to the UK’s ‘green’ travel list in a boost to the region’s tourism product.

The change, which comes into effect from Wednesday 30 June, means that people travelling to specific Caribbean countries on holiday from the UK will not have to quarantine when they return home.

The ‘green’ Caribbean countries are:

  • Anguilla.
  • Antigua and Barbuda.
  • Barbados.
  • Bermuda.
  • British Virgin Islands.
  • Cayman Islands.
  • Dominica.
  • Grenada.
  • Montserrat.
  • Turks and Caicos Islands.

British transport secretary, Grant Shapps, confirmed that all additions to the green list, apart from Malta, will also join the “green watchlist”, which means that these countries are still at risk of moving from green to amber at short notice.

Mr Shapps added that “by late summer” fully-vaccinated UK residents will also be able to avoid quarantine after travelling to amber countries.

He said: “We’re moving forward with efforts to safely reopen international travel this summer, and thanks to the success of our vaccination programme, we’re now able to consider removing the quarantine period for fully vaccinated UK arrivals from amber countries – showing a real sign of progress.”

Many Caribbean islands have been on the UK’s amber list since May.

Anyone travelling to an amber country at the moment, has to produce a negative COVID-19 test 48 hours before returning to the UK; once back in the country, they must have two additional tests and quarantine at home for ten days.

The UK’s traffic light travel system explained:

Green: arrivals will need to take a pre-departure test as well as a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test on or before day two of their arrival back into the UK – but will not need to quarantine on return (unless they receive a positive result) or take any additional tests.

Amber: arrivals will need to quarantine for 10 days and take a pre-departure test, as well as a PCR test on day two and day eight. There will be the option to take an additional test on day five to end self-isolation early.

Red: arrivals will be subject to restrictions currently in place for red list countries which include a 10-day stay in a managed quarantine hotel, pre-departure testing and mandatory PCR testing on day two and eight.
