It’s Better Than Ever! St. Patrick’s Festival 2024
by Lou-Ann Jordan Mar 4, 2024
The St. Patrick’s Festival is one of the most anticipated annual events on the island—some would argue it’s the most anticipated. Nevertheless, it’s two weeks full of lively daytime and nighttime entertainment. Typically, the festivities begin the first week in March and culminate on the internationally recognised St. Patrick’s Day. This year’s celebrations will run from 8 to 18 March 2024.
With the festival commemorating its 42nd anniversary, we can expect the merriment to exceed that in previous years. Certainly, there will be a higher turnout, as has been the case with each instalment. Throughout its history, we’ve seen more visitors attend the celebrations. We’ve even had a growing number of regional participants in our competitions. We certainly love it and relish the opportunity to share this unique aspect of our culture. Like the pattern of intermingling lines in the traditional madras worn by our women, the St. Patrick’s Festival combines our African and European heritage.
This mix is also seen in the type of activities that occur. There’s always something for everyone. Although the annual St. Patrick’s beauty pageant, calypso competition and parade are the major draws, many look forward to the sporting and sightseeing events, literary sessions and, of course, the fetes.
