St. Kitts and Nevis has many exciting activities for nationals and tourists.

Whether you choose to stay inland or out on the ocean, there are adventures around each corner.

Snorkelling, windsurfing, parasailing, surfing, scuba diving and kayaking are just a few of the popular water activities on the dual island.

We’ve decided to feature scuba diving, a popular and adventurous water sport.

Scuba diving is a water sport that entails swimming underwater with a scuba. According to Scuba Guru, the term was coined by Dr Christian Lambertsen, who worked on the earliest prototypes in 1954.

The acronym ‘scuba’ means Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus.

The apparatus utilises a portable supply of compressed air at a regulated pressure, which allows for breathing underwater.

It is strongly recommended that people who are interested in scuba diving receive the requisite training before attempting it.

Fortunately, most resorts have certified trainers and offer training to interested guests.

You’ll love diving in St. Kitts and Nevis as it boasts calm, gentle waters with great visibility and abundant marine life.

There are many sub-aquatic caves, near-shore reefs and wreck sites just waiting to be explored.

The best places to scuba dive in St. Kitts and Nevis.

Devil’s Cave

A stunning 40 feet dive located on the west coast of Nevis, where divers navigate overhangs and coral grottos. Popular marine life in this area includes stingray, blue tang, lobsters, glassy sweepers and nurse sharks.

River Taw

This is the most popular wreck dive site in St. Kitts. It is the location of a 144-foot-long freighter, which sunk in 1985. This wreck site is the home to turtles, snappers, stingrays and squirrelfish. It is frequently used for training novice divers.

Thermal Vents

Also known as the Hot Vents is the home to some of the largest lobsters and crabs. The dive takes you through a reef that starts at 35 feet and drops to 95 feet. The underwater thermal vents feature 38°C water, which spews from the bottom.

The Narrows

Commonly referred to as the Narrows, this two-mile channel separates the two islands. It is often used for swim events and is also quite popular among divers as it boasts white tips, turtles, lobsters, nurse sharks and other marine life. The Christina shipwreck is close by at a depth of 73 feet.

If you are interested in pursuing scuba diving professionally, some of the internationally recognised training organisations are:

1. Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI),

2. Scuba Schools International (SSI)

3. National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI)

4. British Sub Aqua Club (BSAC)

5. Scuba Diving International (SDI

We hope you will check out some of the dive sites on this list. Here’s to amazing discoveries while scuba diving in St. Kitts and Nevis!
