Five types of headaches and what they mean

We’ve all experienced headaches.

At times the pain can be debilitating, other times, relief may arrive after medicating with over-the-counter drugs or resting. In some instances, however, medical assistance may be required.

There are many different types of headaches.

Each headache has its symptoms and triggers. When we understand the type of headache that we have, with the help of our doctor, we will be better able to treat, or even prevent it.

The following list includes some of the most common headaches and possible causes.

Tension: Tension headaches are the most common headaches. They usually manifest with dull, non-throbbing pain and can range from mild to severe. Tell-tale signs include tightness of scalp or in the neck. These headaches may be indicators of stress or depression.

Migraine: This headache can be debilitating. It is the second most common headache and can last for a few hours to two or more days. Symptoms include light-headedness, nausea, auras (sensory disturbances) and blurry vision. Migraine can be caused by a change in altitude, certain foods, hunger, weather, lights and hormones, among other issues.

Cluster headaches: Cluster headaches can be very severe and may occur suddenly. Pain from this headache is one-sided and typically in the vicinity of one eye. Other symptoms include nasal congestion and flushing of the face. These headaches happen in groups and may occur one to three times per day during a cluster period. A cluster period may last two weeks to three months. (https://mclaneedgers.com)  Excessive smoking and alcoholic beverages can trigger cluster headaches.

Sinus: sinus headache can be caused by anatomical deformities such as deviated septum that blocks the sinus ducts, infection, or nasal polyps. These headaches are rare and manifest via a nagging pain in the nasal area. This pain may increase in intensity throughout the day. Pain from a sinus headache may be caused by acute infection, accompanied by fever, which causes a blockage of sinus ducts and preventing normal drainage.

Thunderclap headaches: This type of headache is rare and can cause excruciating pain. Symptoms include nausea, confusion, numbness, changes in vision, weakness, fever and seizures. With a thunderclap headache, the pain comes suddenly and can be felt anywhere on your head or neck. This type of headache requires immediate medical attention. It may be caused by bleeding in or around your brain, which can be life-threatening.

Other common headaches include hormone, allergy, post-traumatic headaches, Hemicrania continua and rebound headaches.

Headaches can be a symptom of a serious health condition. We recommend that you speak with your doctor or health care provider if your headaches become regular, more severe or persistent.
