A birthstone is associated with each month of the year. Various myths and legends refer to the birthstones’ healing powers and therapeutic effects. However, in modern times, it makes the selection of jewellery much simpler when personalizing a gift.

For those born in August, they enjoy the intriguing lime green gemstone known as the “Evening Emerald” – peridot.

Peridot is the gem variety of the mineral olivine which is found deep inside the Earth’s mantle, often brought to the surface by erupting volcanoes. However, olivine has also been identified in a large number of meteorites, which means these particular gemstones originated in space!

The word “peridot” is believed to have derived from the Arabic word for gem, “faridat”. Although some scholars disagree and choose to believe that the Greek word meaning “giving plenty” is the name source.

The colour of peridot is consistent although shades may range depending upon the presence of iron, varying from yellowy green to olive to brownish green.

The most prized peridot feature a pure lime green hue without any tinges of brown or yellow.

Peridot is mined across the world including the USA, China, Burma, Pakistan and Africa.

Regarded by the Ancient Egyptians as “the gem of the sun”, they believed that it protected its wearer against nightmare and evil at night, ensuring restful sleep, peace and contentment.
