You may have heard about activated charcoal, the newest trend on the beauty block. But what is it, how do you use it, and is it actually effective? Let’s find out!

What is activated charcoal?

“Why would anyone willingly ingest charcoal?” you may ask. Don’t worry, this type of charcoal is not the same as what you’d find in barbecue grills or charred wood. Activated charcoal is exposed to much higher temperatures, making it porous and binding. This means that the nontoxic charcoal molecules can bind to, and absorb toxic substances.

What is it used for?

These days, activated charcoal has become a popular health and beauty product. Because of its ability to naturally clean and purify, it is being used in whitening toothpaste, face masks, and even in health drinks. Historically, it has also been used to rid the body of poison; it can absorb up to 60% of unwanted substances from the gastrointestinal tract.

Is it safe?

Modern medical specialists tend to agree with traditional naturalists on the effectiveness and safety of activated charcoal. In low levels, it is safe to ingest activated charcoal, but there have been no conclusive tests as to its long-term effects.

Those who take prescription drugs should also be aware that regularly taking activated charcoal may affect the absorption of some medicines due to its binding abilities.

As always, it’s best to consult with your doctor to see if activated charcoal is recommended for your use.

How do you use it?

  • For oral care: Many toothpaste brands make black, activated charcoal toothpaste. Some people brush with this special paste to remove the bacteria that cause stains and naturally whiten teeth. You can also rinse your teeth with a mixture of high-quality activated charcoal and water once to twice per week to achieve a brighter smile over time.

  • As a cleanser: You can purchase charcoal face masks, or make your own using high-quality activated charcoal. Some users mix it with their face wash before rinsing off, and others purchase charcoal shampoo to remove product build-up from their locks.

  • For gastrointestinal health: When ingested, charcoal may help support healthy digestion and eliminate excess gas. Activated charcoal can now be found in capsule form, and some health food stores even serve it in coffee or pastries.

There’s a lot of hype surrounding activated charcoal and its benefits for health and beauty right now. As a natural cleanser, it has been praised by proponents of clean-living. Now that you know what it is, the next question is, is it right for you? Speak to your nutritionist or health professional to find out!
