The Turks and Caicos Islands are beautiful. With unique landscapes and water such a bright shade of turquoise you’d be hard pressed to find its equal anywhere in the world.

Our environment is picturesque, it brings visitors to our shores, it brings us joy…but we have to remember that it’s also fragile. The environment is under threat from climate change and pollution. Individuals and businesses are waking up to the need to be more environmentally-friendly, and are making changes.

As the nation contemplates banning plastic bags, Gilley’s Café in Providenciales is already taking a step in the green direction.

The café is handing happy customers their orders in reusable, recyclable paper bags. Goodbye plastic bags. Located at the Providenciales International Airport, Gilley’s is open seven days a week and serves up breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Plastic bags are a nightmare for the environment. Both land and marine animals end up eating them and suffer from serious health problems, or die, as a result. Plastic bags often end up in drains and sewage systems causing blockages or are washed out to sea. These bags also don’t biodegrade; they simply break down into smaller fragments which end up polluting the soil and water.

It’s easy to reduce the amount of plastic bags that end up polluting the planet. Use reusable cloth bags! Or go for paper bags like Gilley’s.
