Birthstone of the month: deeply rich purple amethyst

A birthstone is traditionally associated with each month of the year. Various myths and legends refer to the birthstones’ healing powers and therapeutic effects. However, in modern times, it makes the selection of jewellery much simpler when personalizing a gift.

For those born in February, they enjoy one of the world’s most popular gemstones – amethyst.

Due to its hardness and durability, it’s perfect for use in rings, necklaces, bracelets and pendants, as it can withstand everyday wear.

The intensity of the purple attracts a lot of attention and is regarded as the colour of royalty, featured in European royal and nobel collections in tiaras, necklaces, bangles, brooches and earrings. Amethyst is available in pretty much every shape, size and cut.

There are few purple gemstones available, although some shades of sapphire, charoite and tanzanite may be mistaken for amethyst.

Amethyst is distinguished by its deep purple colour, the colours range from purple and violet to pale red-violet. The deeper colours are more valuable.

Amethyst is often referred to as the preferred stone of bishops. There are even a number of references to amethyst in the Bible. In Exodus 28:19 and 39:12, amethyst is the precious stone in the breastplate of the High Priest, and in the foundation of the New Jerusalem, Revelation 21:20.

Ancient legends reveal that the Greeks used to wear amethyst believing that the gemstone would keep them level-headed and prevent intoxication. The name supposedly derives from the Greek word “amethystos” which means “not drunken” in order words – “intoxicated.”

Its healing powers are associated with physical ailments of the nervous system and emotional issues, curing insomnia and nightmares, and breathing problems.

As the birthstone for February, the gemstone is appropriate for those born under the zodiac signs of Aquarius and Pisces. Because amethyst symbolises sincerity, humility and spiritual, it is befitting that it is also deemed as appropriate to represent “The Age of Aquarius.”
