Earth Hour began in 2007 as a symbolic lights-out event. Since then, it has inspired millions of people all over the world to take environmental action by consuming less energy.

The concept is simple: on 30 March, turn off your lights and electrical devices for one hour from 8.30pm to 9.30pm.

These days, we tend to rely on technology for entertainment; if you’re wondering what to do without power, here are five ways to celebrate Earth Hour.

 Go stargazing

In the Caribbean, we’re lucky to have clearer views of the night sky than regions that suffer from more concentrated air pollution. Use Earth Hour to step outside and marvel at the stars. Make it a picnic by packing a blanket and snacks.

Host a bonfire

Gather your friends and have a mini camping trip. Light a bonfire, share stories, and cook smores over the fire. If you have more than an hour to spare, camp overnight in your garden or a local camping zone.

Have an acoustic jam night

Host a jam night for your musically-inclined friends. Have everyone bring their acoustic instruments and make music together by candlelight. You can compose songs together, or just play your favourite chart-toppers. For a social twist, have everyone invite a friend that the rest of the group doesn’t know  no technology is great for encouraging conversation with new people!

Take a candlelit bath

Indulge in self-care. Run yourself a hot bath and surround it with candles. Add a bath bomb, flower petals or aromatherapy bath oils for a touch of luxury.

Play old-school games

Keep children entertained with electricity-free games like flashlight tag, handclap games, or board games. Teach them how to play a game from your own childhood or play educational games like Scrabble™ or Trivial Pursuit™.

On 30 March, enjoy one of these power-free pastimes to help protect our world when you celebrate Earth Hour.
