At nine years old, Hillel Academy Student Imani-Leigh Hall is steadily extending her hands into the world of entrepreneurship, and doing it for a cause! Yello had a quick chat with this bright spark to get to know more about her project: ILAH’s Lemon-Aid Stand for Kids.

When did you start ILAH’s Lemon-Aid Stand?
I started on Labour Day in 2017 when I had set up a lemonade stand in my neighbourhood and sold ice cold glasses of lemonade to my neighbours. I convinced them that not only did I make the best lemonade, but every glass purchased would be a ‘sweet’ donation in aid of kids! Well, they believed me, and as a special treat, I also threw in a slice of my Nana’s famous lychee bread pudding. To my surprise, it was all sold out in a minute.

What was the inspiration behind this project?
I have always wanted to do something to help kids who are in need, and as my Nana would always say “one good thing always leads to another”. With my mom’s help, and just about anyone else who wanted to jump in and lend a hand, I was encouraged to continue ILAH’s Lemon-Aid Stand at the Big Baby Shower Parenting Expo in July. Again, I was blessed to experience the sweet taste of success with the sale of several cups!

Why a lemonade stand?
I simply love lemonade and have a passion for mixing drinks. My community has a tradition of buying gifts for selected children’s homes, and so I also wanted to find a creative way to raise funds towards this.

What’s unique about your project?
It’s unique because this is my idea which began with a story: my story. My story is about a nine-year-old with a big dream, a love of lemonade, and a super idea to put these together to make a huge difference in the lives of others.

What I love to see is how willing people are to support my Lemon-Aid Stand. And so ILAH’s Lemon-Aid Stand For Kids was started. This project finds opportunities to assist with food, clothing, educational needs, and fun activities for children. We do just about anything to make a difference in the lives of children who are in need, things to put a smile on their faces and make them very happy!

 

 

Which event has been your most memorable showcase and why?
It was definitely MoDA Market 2018. It was a huge success, and I got to meet so many new people. I also enjoyed the Island Tour sponsored by CPJ, as it allowed me to sell my lemonade in supermarkets in Kingston, Montego Bay, and Ocho Rios. I got to explore new places and learn new things.

What are your other interests?
I enjoy swimming, writing, acting, dancing, travelling to other countries, and exploring Jamaica

What’s your ideal career path?
I want to be a doctor and an actress. Of course, I’d like to own a business.

My Mommy, Dr Thea-Nicole Davis; my Nana, Joan Young Davis; and Michelle Obama!
