  1. Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, wanted to honour her father, William Jackson Smart, a civil war veteran who had single-handedly raised her and her sibling after their mother died in childbirth. She established a day celebrating fathers.
  2. Father’s Day was initially met with ridicule, as some men thought it was sentimental and commercial since it involved gift-giving and flowers in boosting product sales.
  3. Father’s Day was first celebrated on 19 June 1910 in Washington, USA. It became an officially recognised day in 1972.
  4. Some countries, especially Europe and Latin America, use St Joseph’s Day (19 March) to celebrate fathers. However, Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in June in the US, UK, and the Caribbean, among other countries.

  6. Father’s Day has an official flower – a rose. A red rose represents fathers who are alive, and a white rose symbolises that their dad has passed away.
  7. A necktie is the most popular gift besides Father’s Day cards.
  8. After his dad died from typhoid fever after drinking contaminated water from a public source, Halsey W Taylor created the potable water fountain in 1912 to honour him.
  9. Approximately 87 million cards are sent yearly for Father’s Day, making it the fourth most popular day for sending cards.
  10. Most men use social media more after becoming fathers to get product tips or advice from other dads. They also use it to stay abreast of what’s happening with their children.
