Sea moss, also referred to as Irish sea moss, is a type of red algae found around the shores of the Caribbean, North America and Europe.

It has been
used medicinally throughout the region for centuries but has become
increasingly popular recently mainly because of its reputation as a natural aphrodisiac,
although there is no scientific proof to back up that claim.

Sea moss is often
blended with milk and sweeteners to make a creamy drink but can also be made
into a jelly and added to all kinds of food including smoothies, sauces and
soups.

Here are some other interesting facts about sea moss:

* Pure/unrefined sea moss is high in vitamins A, B, C and D and contains iron, magnesium, potassium, and iodine. However, refined or processed sea moss, known as Carrageenan, has been linked to cancer, stomach issues, and irritable bowel syndrome.

* Sea moss is believed to have antiviral properties which can help combat respiratory infections such as sore throats and coughs.

* According to Web MD, early studies have found that sea moss can boost the immune system and may even protect the body from contracting salmonella.

* Sea moss can be applied topically. Its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties can be helpful with issues like acne and fighting the signs of ageing.
