We’re all heading somewhere. Whether it’s to work, school, or an event—we’ve got places to go and get there on time. However, things don’t always go as planned, and a late start may cause us to want to step on the accelerator.

Still, the consistently high figures in road fatalities demand we slow down. Of course, weather conditions impact road safety. As such, we should practice even more conscientiousness during the rainy season when driving. Remember, wet roads are often slippery.

In the US, statistics show that rainfall causes a 71% increase in road crashes. Precipitation is a major factor in the cause of automobile accidents as it increases various types of risk. Now that we are in the rainy season, we must be alert to the heightened dangers of driving in bad weather conditions or simply on rainy days.

Over the next few months, weather patterns will include light and heavy rainfall on different days, even more so in the hurricane season. As we drive to and from our various engagements, we want to practice safe driving, ensuring we arrive at our destinations without a mishap. To do so, we’re sharing eight tips on how to drive safely in the rain.

Seven Useful Tips on How to Drive in the Rain

Do a quick vehicle check. Before heading off to your destination, give your vehicle a once over. Check your windshield wipers, headlights, and taillights. These should all be in good working condition.

Examine your tyre tread level. Skidding is not uncommon when driving on wet roads. When driving in the rain with low-tread tyres, the chances of hydroplaning increase because there is less traction. In such instances, your tyre loses its grip and slides on the water that has settled on the road’s surface. Therefore, it’s best not to drive with worn tires. Check your tyre tread depth, especially if it’s been a while since you’ve changed your tyres.

Drive moderately. When driving in the rain, you should avoid two extremes: timidity and recklessness. A timid driver will likely operate at a significantly low speed, causing traffic to back up. In such a situation, the likelihood of rear-end accidents increases. On the other hand, reckless drivers may disregard wet roads and speed, not considering the possibility of losing control of their vehicle. It’s advisable to drive cautiously, even more so during bad weather.

Avoid driving through puddles. Driving through puddles and standing water can be dangerous. First, doing so can cause your vehicle to hydroplane. Also, you may underestimate the puddle’s depth and damage your transmission. Avoid them altogether. Steering around or switching lanes is best. If you cannot step off the gas, carefully manoeuvring the vehicle forward.

No sudden braking. We’ve mentioned hydroplaning a few times because it’s a serious problem when driving on wet roads. Another way to avoid skids that could lead to crashes is no sudden brakes. Instead, drive slowly and take your feet off the accelerator earlier than you usually would. That way, your vehicle can gradually slow down or glide to a stop.

Don’t tailgate. In good or bad weather conditions tailgating is a bad idea. Leave ample distance between you and the vehicle in front of you. It’s been recommended that you always maintain three seconds of space or one car length between you and the one in front. In rainy weather, you can even extend that a bit. This practice will give you sufficient time to respond if something happens. It also allows you to have a better view of what’s ahead.

Use your headlights. If the rain is affecting your visibility, then switch on your headlights. It will help both you and the other drivers on the road.

This rainy season let’s work together to lessen the number of collisions and accidents on our roads. Try these tips to stay safe when driving in the rain.
