Covering 5,643 hectares, Washington Slagbaai National Park offers a lot to its visitors.

The nature sanctuary was the first of its kind to be established in the Netherlands Antilles. It is home to a range of local species that include parrots, sea turtles, iguanas, and Bonaire’s famous flamingos.

In addition to incredible fauna, the park also features stunning beaches, adventure activities, and historical sites built during the island’s colonial period.

With so much to see and do, where do you start?

Here are five things you must do at Washington Slagbaai National Park.

Climb Brandaris

At 241 meters (784 feet), the peak of Brandaris is the highest point on Bonaire and offers incredible views over the island, especially at sunset.

The medium difficulty ascent via the arid Subí Brandaris trail takes approximately 45 minutes to an hour and is recommended for those in good physical condition.

Look for Birds

Whether you want to see flamingos or spot other rare, migratory and endemic birds, there are plenty of areas in the park to find the species you’re looking for. Keep an eye out for yellow warblers, yellow-shouldered parrots, brown-crested flycatchers and black-whiskered vireo.

Go Cliff Jumping

Adrenaline junkies will get a rush out of cliff jumping at Washington Slagbaai.

The most popular jumping cliff is at Boca Slagbaai, at a height of 25 feet. If you have the courage, jump off into beautiful blue waters and throw in a few flips if you can. Of course, always jump safely! Always jump with others nearby, and be mindful of natural conditions like weather, current, and rocks.

See Historic Buildings

There are a few historic buildings in Washington Slagbaai, including lighthouses. You can anchor your tour around the park by visiting these interesting cultural sites.

Lighthouses include the ruins of Malmok, located at the northern tip of the park and abandoned shortly after its construction began in the early 20th century, and Seru Benata, constructed in Malmok’s stead two kilometres to the south.

Go Diving

Explore the underwater world by diving one of the six exceptional scuba sites off of Washington Slagbaai Park.

You’ll have a chance to swim with schools of colourful fish, sight lobsters and stingrays and possibly even see manta rays. The reefs here are still relatively healthy and well preserved, and visibility usually ranges from 10 to 30 metres.

If you’re planning to visit Washington Slagbaai National Park, try one of these must-do activities!
